How To Create A New Routine-That Works For You

Tell me if this sounds familiar. You’re sleeping, having a good dream, the alarm goes off and you hit snooze several times before getting up. You wake up to find out that you are now late to work and rush around trying to get ready while you have one foot out the door already. You get to work late, now you need coffee, the meeting was moved up, your boss is upset with you and your day just got worse. When you finally get home you are exhausted and the chaos continues. This doesn’t seem to be a routine that works for you. Lots of people talk about creating a new routine to get more done but not enough tell you how to create a new routine. My goal is to help you create one that works for you.

How often have you said this “I don’t have time”? This is my personal saying and I hate it. Time management is part of creating a new routine, the other ingredient is discipline. Let’s start.

Get a good nights sleep

I know plenty of people, me included, who are not naturally morning people. I have been a night owl for a long time but I have discovered that the later you stay up, the later you wake up and then you’re over tired. Two hours before bed, turn off all the electronics and take 45 minutes to relax your mind and body. Relaxing the mind and body eliminates the chatter in your brain while you are trying to sleep and can’t.

Some suggestions for relaxation:

  • Hot bath with lavender oils and candles
  • Massage
  • yoga
  • Meditation
  • Reading

Take 30 minutes for your usual nighttime routine of grooming. With the remaining 45 minutes, you will use them to get to sleep early. While we are sleeping, our bodies are healing. During the day, we are running around so much and stressed out that our bodies can only perform the functions needed to keep us active.

Get Your Ass Up Out of Bed

I have always hated alarm clocks, I may have broken a few. I prefer to wake up when my body is ready to. The problem with that is, I don’t always listen to the signal. When you do wake up naturally, it’s because of your circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is your biological clock.

Get up an hour before your normal time, take a cold shower to invigorate you, perform your morning routine with a few additions. When your feet hit that floor, be grateful that you woke up, thank god for your day ahead and stretch. This is your quiet time if you have a family with a busy schedule and it sets the tone for your day and your attitude. Now is a great time to walk, run, or perform your preferred exercise routine. Drink lemon water to help the natural detox system. Staying hydrated and moving will keep all of your organ systems working properly.

A few weeks ago, when it was hot and humid in NY, I woke up, got dressed, grabbed my lemon water, headset, phone and walked 2 miles. I would listen to Sean Whalen who does great Facebook Live videos and keep walking everyday. I would take a mild cold shower when I returned, then made eggs and had my coffee. For the rest of the day, I had energy and I was in a good mood despite the sore legs and heat.

How To Make An Agenda

In order to have a productive day, you must create your agenda. Agendas keep you focused on what is a priority in your business life and personal life. Everyone’s schedule will vary depending on their level of success. For those of us who have a lot to get done and usually find themselves saying “I have no time for this”, take your top 10 that have to get done today. Now divide them in half. What top 5 things are on the list that have to get done right now? Then decide what 5 things have to get done by the end of the day that aren’t so crucial.

So how do I decide what’s more important? Well, I’ll put it this way, it won’t be checking social media or emails. Tackle things that are urgent, even if they are not fun. Some most daunting things are best done first thing, that way you don’t dread it all day and lose momentum by 1pm wishing you didn’t have to do this at all ever. Bonus, you will feel relieved that it’s over.

You are never going to finish the to do list, your inbox will still be full when you die so choose what matters to you. If you are a perfectionist like me, it’s hard to just let things go unfinished. You have to realize that you are human and you can only do so much without adding so much stress that it takes a toll on your health. It feels good to see the results at the end of the day, so checking these important items off your list will tell you that you have accomplished what you set out to do.

At The End of The Day, Walk Away

It’s hard to sometimes do but you can’t work yourself to death or obsess and not sleep. Be satisfied with the work and relax, tomorrow is another day. There is a great sense of relief when you are able to check things off and say it’s done. It’s time to spend with the family and friends, be present. Remember, life is too short to work all the time.
